Practice #31 - Declutter Your Phone

The player is loading ...

Your phone is a tool, so treat it as such. Many things to do to your phone are as follows:
- Turn on the grayscale color filter
- This makes using the phone less appealing to the eye and more of a mundane task.
- Delete all of your non-tool apps. This includes youtube, social media, and games. A tool app would be the notes app or the calculator, which are purely tools.
- I recommend deleting all of your social media accounts altogether as well.
- Remove all apps from your home screen. Your home screen should be empty, so you must manually search for certain apps without distraction. This requires you to have a purpose whenever using your phone.
- Remove the suggested apps in the search bar when you swipe down to search.
- Turn off all notifications on your phone and keep your phone on do not disturb mode indefinitely.
- Keep the phone in airplane mode and always power it off when not using it. Power off means going through the process of holding down the power button for a few seconds and sliding the shut-off button, do this every time. Also, keep the phone in the basement or somewhere far away from where you are most of the time.
- This will make it a chore to use your phone, encouraging you to stay off of it. Also, keeping it in a different room will help keep it out of your mind, preventing you from thinking about it.
- Avoid bringing it with you anywhere if you do not have to. I find that 99% of the time I don't even need my phone. If I do, I could use someone else’s phone. I memorize essential phone numbers if I need them.
- Also, keep your phone out of your pocket if you need to bring it. Try and get someone else to hold it or put it in a bag. There are many reasons for this, but for these purposes, it creates another step to use it. If you're interested in other reasons, research how your phone's electromagnetic frequencies scramble your balls and drop your testosterone levels. Remember to keep it powered off and on airplane mode.
1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:07,800
Your phone is one of the most impactful devices in your life.
2
00:00:07,800 --> 00:00:13,000
Over the past couple months, actually over the past year, I've been making small tweaks
3
00:00:13,000 --> 00:00:23,440
over time to make my phone more optimal and actually make it more aligned to my goals.
4
00:00:23,440 --> 00:00:32,000
Over the past couple episodes of this podcast, I've been talking about different one-time
5
00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:41,280
changes that you can make that help you exponentially grow for the future.
6
00:00:41,280 --> 00:00:48,200
All these different one-time changes include your changing your environment, changing your
7
00:00:48,200 --> 00:00:51,360
friends, changing your workspace, your room.
8
00:00:51,360 --> 00:00:55,720
There's a bunch of different one-time changes that you can make.
9
00:00:55,720 --> 00:01:03,440
I want to focus on the phone for now because the best thing that I've done, or actually
10
00:01:03,440 --> 00:01:10,120
one of the better things that I've done over the past year is turn my phone into a tool
11
00:01:10,120 --> 00:01:19,440
because a lot of people, most people use their phones as toys and as like extremely dangerous
12
00:01:19,440 --> 00:01:21,320
devices.
13
00:01:21,320 --> 00:01:27,280
Others for our mental health because that stuff destroys you.
14
00:01:27,280 --> 00:01:35,520
TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, even like simple things like Netflix and even things that I
15
00:01:35,520 --> 00:01:37,680
don't even know.
16
00:01:37,680 --> 00:01:39,560
Phone destroys your mental health.
17
00:01:39,560 --> 00:01:42,760
It destroys your life entirely.
18
00:01:42,760 --> 00:01:46,160
I'm not even going to lie.
19
00:01:46,160 --> 00:01:52,520
When you turn your phone into a tool, then you actually completely change the scripts.
20
00:01:52,520 --> 00:01:54,880
You go from a consumer to a producer.
21
00:01:54,880 --> 00:02:01,680
That's not the cause of it, but when you change your phone to a tool, you actually find that
22
00:02:01,680 --> 00:02:05,040
you don't want to go on your phone.
23
00:02:05,040 --> 00:02:07,400
It's actually a major inconvenience.
24
00:02:07,400 --> 00:02:11,000
I'm going to lay out a bunch of different things that I did.
25
00:02:11,000 --> 00:02:15,000
First of all, I deleted my social media accounts, delete all that stuff.
26
00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:18,440
I had an episode that I posted a couple of days ago about that if you want to learn more
27
00:02:18,440 --> 00:02:19,440
about that.
28
00:02:19,440 --> 00:02:20,640
Delete all that stuff.
29
00:02:20,640 --> 00:02:25,800
Delete all the non-tool apps from your phone.
30
00:02:25,800 --> 00:02:31,160
That's like any entertainment, any video games, anything like that.
31
00:02:31,160 --> 00:02:37,400
Anything that's not absolutely essential, delete it.
32
00:02:37,400 --> 00:02:42,280
The next thing is remove all of your apps from your home screen.
33
00:02:42,280 --> 00:02:44,880
Your home screens should be completely empty.
34
00:02:44,880 --> 00:02:52,080
Including that bottom tab, that bottom bar on the screen, just completely empty everything.
35
00:02:52,080 --> 00:02:57,080
That means that you have to swipe down and search.
36
00:02:57,080 --> 00:03:02,440
Another thing is turn off the recommended app when you swipe down.
37
00:03:02,440 --> 00:03:05,800
On the iPhone, this video is going to be tailored for iPhone users.
38
00:03:05,800 --> 00:03:10,920
If you're an Android user, sorry, you can figure these things out on your own.
39
00:03:10,920 --> 00:03:15,400
I just don't have an iPhone, so I can't really help, or I don't have an Android, so I can't
40
00:03:15,400 --> 00:03:17,800
really help.
41
00:03:17,800 --> 00:03:28,480
On the iPhone, when you swipe down to search for an app, disable the thing that recommends
42
00:03:28,480 --> 00:03:30,160
apps.
43
00:03:30,160 --> 00:03:35,760
When you disable that, all that shows up is the search bar.
44
00:03:35,760 --> 00:03:37,400
There's no apps that show up.
45
00:03:37,400 --> 00:03:42,360
That means that you have to manually search instead of tap.
46
00:03:42,360 --> 00:03:49,600
Then another thing is turn on grayscale mode on your phone.
47
00:03:49,600 --> 00:03:54,240
Change your wallpaper to something bland, like black.
48
00:03:54,240 --> 00:03:55,440
Just pure black.
49
00:03:55,440 --> 00:03:58,880
Then change your black screen to black also.
50
00:03:58,880 --> 00:04:01,120
Turn on do not disturb inevitably.
51
00:04:01,120 --> 00:04:03,120
Wait, inevitably?
52
00:04:03,120 --> 00:04:04,360
No.
53
00:04:04,360 --> 00:04:09,320
Turn on do not disturb indefinitely.
54
00:04:09,320 --> 00:04:11,160
These are all things.
55
00:04:11,160 --> 00:04:15,840
Another thing is keeping your phone on airplane mode and powered off.
56
00:04:15,840 --> 00:04:24,680
Actually close, hold down the power button and swipe that thing to actually shut it down.
57
00:04:24,680 --> 00:04:28,480
Keep that on airplane mode and powered off whenever you're not using it.
58
00:04:28,480 --> 00:04:35,160
Another thing is make it so that you have to click the power button to turn on your
59
00:04:35,160 --> 00:04:36,240
phone.
60
00:04:36,240 --> 00:04:44,840
When your phone is on, but it's off, by default the phone automatically turns on when you
61
00:04:44,840 --> 00:04:46,000
flip it over.
62
00:04:46,000 --> 00:04:49,000
When you pick it up, it automatically turns on.
63
00:04:49,000 --> 00:04:50,000
Disable that.
64
00:04:50,000 --> 00:04:55,280
Make it so you have to press the power button to turn it on.
65
00:04:55,280 --> 00:05:01,640
It's probably a bunch of other stuff that I did, or actually I don't even know.
66
00:05:01,640 --> 00:05:03,440
You'll find a bunch of things.
67
00:05:03,440 --> 00:05:08,000
I'm pretty sure that's all the things that I did for my phone.
68
00:05:08,000 --> 00:05:12,160
One last thing is make sure you change your environment where you keep your phone.
69
00:05:12,160 --> 00:05:15,200
Never keep your phone in your pocket.
70
00:05:15,200 --> 00:05:17,560
First of all, don't bring your phone places with you.
71
00:05:17,560 --> 00:05:22,840
I didn't bring my phone to school at all for an entire semester, last semester.
72
00:05:22,840 --> 00:05:24,880
I'm not going to school anymore, so I can't.
73
00:05:24,880 --> 00:05:28,800
If I had school again, then I wouldn't bring it again.
74
00:05:28,800 --> 00:05:30,400
Don't bring your phone places with you.
75
00:05:30,400 --> 00:05:36,120
I went to the Dominican Republic out of the country for an entire week of vacation.
76
00:05:36,120 --> 00:05:37,960
I didn't even bring my phone with me.
77
00:05:37,960 --> 00:05:42,880
I kept it in my house.
78
00:05:42,880 --> 00:05:45,120
Make sure you don't bring your phone places.
79
00:05:45,120 --> 00:05:54,000
If it's absolutely essential, like for example, I went to Florida by myself.
80
00:05:54,000 --> 00:05:57,520
I didn't want to bring my phone, but I understood that there was a lot of things that I would
81
00:05:57,520 --> 00:06:04,480
need my phone, like Uber and the airplane tickets.
82
00:06:04,480 --> 00:06:07,640
There's things that I needed my phone for for that trip.
83
00:06:07,640 --> 00:06:10,960
If it's absolutely essential, and by the way, emergencies don't count.
84
00:06:10,960 --> 00:06:12,280
What if there's an emergency?
85
00:06:12,280 --> 00:06:14,760
No, emergencies don't happen.
86
00:06:14,760 --> 00:06:22,240
If they do, every other person has a phone with them, so you can use their phone.
87
00:06:22,240 --> 00:06:25,360
If it's absolutely essential, you can bring your phone, but other than that, don't bring
88
00:06:25,360 --> 00:06:28,800
your phone.
89
00:06:28,800 --> 00:06:37,160
Another thing is leave your phone in the basement or the attic or somewhere far away.
90
00:06:37,160 --> 00:06:41,960
Leave your phone somewhere where it's very inconvenient for you to get up and walk all
91
00:06:41,960 --> 00:06:42,960
the way over there.
92
00:06:42,960 --> 00:06:50,080
Preferably separate your phone, separate yourself and your phone with stairs.
93
00:06:50,080 --> 00:06:53,200
Like I said, the basement or the attic.
94
00:06:53,200 --> 00:06:59,480
The best case scenario is to have a walk and stairs in between you and your phone.
95
00:06:59,480 --> 00:07:05,800
That means you have to get up off the couch, walk, go down the stairs, use the phone, and
96
00:07:05,800 --> 00:07:08,560
then go back up the stairs.
97
00:07:08,560 --> 00:07:13,080
Leave your phone somewhere far away and, like I said, leave it on airplane mode and
98
00:07:13,080 --> 00:07:15,560
power it off.
99
00:07:15,560 --> 00:07:20,400
That's pretty much all of the things that I did with my phone to...
100
00:07:20,400 --> 00:07:25,320
Oh, and also delete your YouTube account and don't use YouTube ever again.
101
00:07:25,320 --> 00:07:29,920
Or don't watch YouTube unless it's required.
102
00:07:29,920 --> 00:07:34,880
For example, when I'm working on work and figuring out how to learn how to edit, there's
103
00:07:34,880 --> 00:07:40,600
some things that I have to use YouTube to figure out how to do certain edits.
104
00:07:40,600 --> 00:07:43,200
That's the only time I use YouTube.
105
00:07:43,200 --> 00:07:48,800
That's pretty much all of the things that I recommend that I can think of right now
106
00:07:48,800 --> 00:08:13,560
to declutter your phone and make it more optimal.
